Project Management Qualifications

A number of qualifications are available in project management. There are broadly two distinct types; professional and academic.

Professional project management qualifications

Within the majority of countries there is a single professional project management institute. Examples of these are:

  • Association for Project Management (APM) - UK based; and
  • Project Management Institute (PMI) - US based.

There is also an umbrella organization called the International Project Management Association (IPMA). Currently IPMA comprises over thirty National Associations primarily in Europe but also in Africa and Asia.

Visit the IPMA web site for more information

Academic project management qualifications

There is considerable choice in this area. The most obvious qualifications are those offered by a university. This is generally at the Msc (Master of science) level although MBAs in project management are also available.

APM Qualifications

  • Introductory Certificate in Project Management
  • APMP (IPMA Level D)
  • Practitioner Qualification (IPMA Level C)
  • Certified Project Manager (IPMA Level B)
  • Risk Management Certificates

Visit the APM web site for more information

Other Qualifications
Some professional institutions other a specific qualification in project management. For instance members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) are awarded the title 'Chartered project management surveyor' if they have relevant experience.

PMI Qualifications

  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM™)
